From Accra to Annecy: Ghanaian Animation Takes the Global Stage

From the early days of aspiring to international recognition to becoming a regular presence at the world's leading animation festival, the journey of Ghanaian animation has been nothing short of remarkable. What was once an ambitious dream for a handful of studios is now evolving into a vibrant movement that is capturing international attention and positioning Ghana as one of Africa's emerging animation hubs.

This year, five Ghanaian animation studios representing the Creation Africa Ghana (CAG) delegation made the journey to Annecy, France, to participate in the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market (MIFA). Their participation was not only showcasing their own creative businesses but was also demonstrating the remarkable growth, ambition and global potential of Ghana's animation industry. Representing the CAG Ghana delegation at Annecy 2026 were Kobesh Pictures, Addysheen Impressions, Mills Media, AnimaxFYB Studios and Wobble Animation. Together, they were presenting Ghanaian stories, ideas and creative excellence to international producers, broadcasters, distributors, investors and fellow creators while building relationships capable of shaping the future of their businesses.

Through Creation Africa Ghana, the flagship programme of the Embassy of France in Ghana implemented in partnership with Impact Hub Accra, opportunities are continuing to be created for Ghanaian creative entrepreneurs to access international markets, establish strategic partnerships and accelerate the growth of sustainable creative enterprises across Africa and beyond.

Preparing for Annecy

Success at Annecy begins long before delegates board their flights to France.

Each year, Creation Africa Ghana organises a comprehensive preparation workshop to ensure participants are arriving fully equipped with the skills, confidence and practical knowledge needed to maximise every opportunity available during the festival. This year's Annecy Prep Workshop, hosted at the AnimaxFYB Studios, was facilitated by the international expert Jessica Hagan. The workshop focused on strengthening pitch presentations, refining project positioning and preparing delegates to communicate confidently with international partners. Through practical coaching, industry insights and expert feedback, participants refined their presentations while gaining valuable knowledge about the expectations of the global animation market. Delegates also participated in a dedicated pre-departure briefing covering travel logistics, networking strategies, festival planning and practical guidance for navigating one of the world's largest animation markets with confidence.

The Ghana Creative Arts Agency further strengthened the journey by hosting a Meet and Mingle that brought together travelling delegates, selected Creation Africa Ghana participants and representatives from Ghana's wider animation ecosystem. The event celebrated collaboration while reinforcing the importance of representing Ghana collectively on the international stage.

Investing in Creative Excellence

Creation Africa Ghana fully funds the participation of the selected studios by covering travel, accommodation and festival accreditation, removing barriers that often prevent talented creatives from accessing international opportunities. This investment enables delegates to focus on building relationships, exploring new business opportunities, presenting their projects and learning from global leaders within the animation industry.

For many delegates, Annecy is much more than attending an international festival. It is validating years of hard work while demonstrating that Ghanaian animation belongs on the global stage.

Reflecting on his experience, Kofi Badu Eshun of Kobesh Pictures shared:

"I am sincerely grateful to Creation Africa Ghana for making it possible for me to attend this programme. Without this support, I would not have had the opportunity to participate. Even if no immediate investor or co production opportunities emerge, the knowledge, insights and skills I gained throughout the programme are already highly valuable and impactful for my work moving forward."

For Kofi, the Ghana Pavilion became the foundation for meaningful engagement throughout the festival.

‍"The exhibition stand was where I established the majority of my professional connections during the festival. As this was my first time attending, I was unable to schedule meetings in advance. However, I was able to make up for this by proactively networking with exhibitors throughout the event."

Similarly, Francis Yushau Brown of AnimaxFYB Studios established valuable professional connections during the festival and entered discussions around future co production opportunities. He also highlighted the strong visibility of the Ghana Pavilion, noting that the collective national presence attracted considerable interest from visitors and industry professionals.

Building Ghana's Animation Ecosystem

Ghana's growing presence at Annecy is reflecting years of collaboration across the country's creative ecosystem. The Animation Association of Ghana is continuing to play an instrumental role in advocating for the animation industry, strengthening professional networks and championing the growth of animation nationally. Through its leadership and continued advocacy, the Association is helping to create greater visibility, stronger collaboration and increased opportunities for Ghanaian animators.

The Ghana Creative Arts Agency is also continuing to demonstrate leadership by convening stakeholders, supporting industry development and advancing initiatives that are positioning Ghana's creative economy for long term growth. Its commitment to creating opportunities for collaboration and international engagement is contributing significantly to the continued development of the country's animation sector.

Together with the Embassy of France in Ghana and Creation Africa Ghana, we are building an enabling environment where creative talent can flourish, businesses can scale and Ghanaian stories can reach audiences around the world.

Annecy 2026 highlights another important chapter in Ghana's animation journey.

Delegates are returning home with stronger international networks, valuable industry knowledge, fresh inspiration and renewed confidence to continue building continental and globally competitive creative businesses. As more studios are emerging and more original stories are being developed, Ghana's animation industry is continuing to demonstrate that it possesses the talent, creativity and ambition required to compete internationally.
